A downward movement of surface water generally caused by converging currents or when water mass becomes more dense than the surrounding water. See upwelling, and convergence.

An apparent lowering of distant terrestrial objects by abnormal atmospheric refraction. Because of sinking, objects normally visible at or near the horizon sometimes disappear below the horizon. The opposite is looming.
